June 20th marked this year’s Summer Solstice….the longest day of the year and the shortest night. It was also a FULL Moon that night which, according to information I found on the internet, has not occurred since 1967…….and the next one will not occur until 2097! So for many of us it will be the only occurrence of this event in our lifetime. How cool is that?!
So what does the Summer Solstice mean to us? It is a time to let go, to surrender, to set new intentions, and to find BALANCE.
The sun signifies masculine energy; fire, hot, intense, receiving. The sun can be “draining” to us…taking away our energy. While the moon is very feminine in its energy; soft, illuminating, giving. One of the more common phrases associated with the moon tends to be 'Wow! I couldn't sleep at all, the moon kept me up!'. It GIVES us energy.
The summer solstice is the longest day of the year. The sun shines the brightest and the longest. To balance this act, the full moon is also the strongest, the brightest at this time. Therefore, this once in a lifetime event is the perfect day to focus on creating more balance in your life; in your job, in your family, in your relationships with others, and especially with yourself.
As we are now over a week past the day/night of summer solstice, pause for a moment and set your intention to find and create balance in your life. To let go of habits or thoughts that don’t serve you. Take time each day to meditate on this, even if its just for five minutes.
The Summer Solstice was also the day my sweet 12 year old Chihuahua, Molly, passed away. She was the light of my life, my constant companion, and truly offered me comfort and happiness every day. I feel that is it is not a coincidence that she left this earth on this rare occurrence of a summer Solstice/ Full Moon day……a “once in a lifetime event” that signified her “one of a kind” sweet soul. I mourn her passing every day, but have been finding comfort every time I look at the sun or the moon each day, knowing that she is still shining her energy on me all of the time. Helping me to find balance.
Find peace and comfort from your intentions, meditation, and your asana practice….It is a GIFT to yourself to take time out for you. Be grateful every day for the people, and things in your life that bring you joy, and even for the ones that challenge you.
The light in me , honors the light in you. SHINE BRIGHTLY.
