I recently had the privilege of taking a class with Seane Corn, an internationally known Yoga teacher and activist, in Jacksonville, and also with Dylan Werner who is known for his incredible inversions and arm balances, in New Smyrna Beach.
Seane led a group discussion and a master class, and there were over 60 yogis in the room…..only approximately 5 of them were NOT yoga teachers. This made me so happy and was a great reminder of the mind set that I have always had…..ALWAYS BE A STUDENT ! In my life as a personal trainer , as a running coach, as a competitive athlete, as an artist, I have been a “teacher”, but have also always been a student. When I started to practice yoga over 9 years ago, I knew that if I ever decided to be a teacher, I would always FIRST be a student.
As a yoga teacher and owner of Lotus Yoga and Fitness/mother of 4 teenagers/wife/athlete it is hard to find time to do my own asana or meditation practice some days, but I make it a priority. In addition to my personal practice I try to practice with a local teacher or with MY teacher every week. I would be a fraud if I stood at the front of the room and preached to my students the importance of their yoga or meditation practice…but didn’t do it myself !
I also constantly read Yogic texts, online articles, anatomy books and spiritual guides. Knowledge is enlightening and empowering. It brings new ideas and energy to everything I do.
I encourage you, in your life, to always be a student. Not just on your mat, but in everything you do. Do you play an instrument? Keep taking lessons! Do you like to paint? Take a lesson! I have been skiing since I was a teenager, but when my husband and I go skiing every year we always take a lesson on the first day out on the slopes. It has never been a waste of time and every instructor has taught me something new.
So do what you love. Find the energy in the activities that bring you joy…..and look at them with new eyes….as a STUDENT. If you continue to think with an inquisitive mind you will always enjoy every passion you have.
