The Ripple Effect
The Ripple Effect
July 25, 2017 by Debbie Yarbrough
“The impact you have on the world is greater than you could ever imagine, and the choices you make affect the whole.” -Madison Taylor   There is a passage I have read often to my students at Lotus Yoga and Fitness called “The Ripple Effect”. It explains how we have the ability to make a change in the lives of others as well as in our own lives.  We sometimes think that in order to make a big transformation that there has to be an extreme action. But I believe the opposite is true. I believe that small changes in our daily life has a bigger effect on ourselves and on the world as a whole. Read More >>
5 Benefits of Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)
Pranayama (or breathing practice) is one of the 8 limbs of yoga. It is commonly used at the beginning or end of an asana (physical) practice, but it is a “practice” all of its own. Many yogis have a regular or daily pranayama practice in addition to an asana practice. One of my favorite pranayama practices is Nadi Shodhana, or more commonly referred to in my classes I teach at Lotus Yoga as “alternate nostril breathing. I like to begin my evening classes particularly with this or another pranayama practice to help calm the body and mind from the busy day before we begin to move our bodies. Read More >>

I recently read a book given to me by one of my students called “Waking”, by Matthew Sanford. It is a memoir about his life after he survived a car accident that killed his father and sister and left him with a broken neck and paralyzed from the chest down at the age of 13, and how as an adult he becomes a YOGA teacher! 3 Elements of Successful Yoga Practice
3 Elements of Successful Yoga Practice
January 24, 2017 by Debbie Yarbrough
Most of my students that attend my classes at Lotus Yoga know that my personal mantra is “Do your practice”. I believe that your life will be happy and successful if your “practices” that enrich your daily life are done frequently in order for them to become “habits”. This applies to all practices on and off of the yoga mat, but for the purpose of this blog I will be referring to the physical aspect of yoga or what is known as Asana (postures) practice. I have been practicing yoga for over a decade and my asana practice has changed over this time due to age, injuries, time, learning, self growth, etc. But I have found the following key elements to be absolutely true for a Yoga practice to be successful. The Importance of Mantras
The Importance of Mantras
October 25, 2016 by Debbie Yarbrough
At the end of my classes that I teach at Lotus Yoga and Fitness, I ask my students to end their practice by "repeating their own mantra, affirmation or prayer". I truly believe that our thoughts and words are powerful vehicles to change our lives. If we put INTENTION and ACTION behind our words and thoughts we can re-wire the way we think and act over time with practice. Read More >>
3 Reasons Why I do Yoga
3 Reasons Why I do Yoga
September 26, 2016 by Debbie Yarbrough
Yoga postures (asanas) are the practice of connecting movement to the breath, but the wider practice of the eight limbs of yoga is to bring unity to the body, mind and spirit. Through mindful movement, connected to the breath, yoga asana can bring us back into our bodies, thus putting us back in touch with our true “Self.” Yoga is a “Practice”, it is not just an exercise routine, and the asanas are just one of the 8 Limbs of yoga. It is my “practice” of all 8 limbs of yoga that are the reasons I do yoga, but these are the 3 most important ones to me. They are why I practice, and why I share my practice through teaching.
